The New York Red Bulls are halfway through a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series against Tijuana, but before that can be concluded on Tuesday, March 13, the team must get its MLS season underway.
RBNY’s 2018 MLS home-opener - and MLS season-opener - sees Portland Timbers provide the opposition. Arguably the Timbers’ biggest off-season move was the change in head coach that saw Caleb Porter leave the club and Giovanni Savarese replace him.
Savarese used to score goals for fun for MetroStars, and went to win trophies for fun as coach of the New York Cosmos in NASL. Now he’s back in MLS, serving as a head coach in the league for the first time in his career.
The Red Bulls might be forgiven for being more focused on Tijuana on Tuesday than this game against Portland, but part of the challenge for any team that wants to be successful is finding a way to win in multiple competitions.
This is RBNY’s third game in the last 10 days, and they have another ahead three days after this one. So squad depth and early-season fitness will be tested.
