5 Questions with the RBNY Fanbase: Kevin Mota

Few fans have a connection to the Red Bulls that runs as deep as Kevin’s.

On May 1st, 2017, Red Bulls fan Kevin Mota started a GoFundMe campaign for a new motorized wheelchair with a goal of $5,000.

The RBNY fanbase was quick to show their overwhelming support for one of their own, and within a few short months Kevin’s campaign reached the goal - and DOUBLED it.

But it wasn’t only friends and family who donated to the cause - many members of the Red Bulls first-team made contributions as well: Bradley Wright-Phillips, Luis Robles, Derrick Etienne Jr., Aurelien Collin, Tyler Adams, Ryan Meara, Damien Perrinelle, Sacha Kljestan, and Sal Zizzo.

We got a chance to interview Kevin this past week for a conversation about his passion for the New York Red Bulls and how his fandom began:

OaM: How did you first find out about the Red Bulls/MetroStars? And, perhaps more importantly: What kept you supporting them through all these years?

Kevin M.: I grew up watching mainly European futbol, but I had knowledge about some MLS teams. It wasn’t until 2010 where they fully got my attention - when they brought [Thierry] Henry and [Rafa] Marquez to the club. From there I really started falling in love with the team. And what also helped is that my favorite color has been Red!!

OaM: What’s the most memorable RBNY/MetroStars moment you got to see in-person?

Kevin M.: My most memorable moment has to be attending my first ever game/derby against NYC FC when the team won 2-1. Verón debuted in that game as well.

OaM: Who is your favorite Red Bulls player of all-time?

Kevin M.: My all-time favorite Red Bull player has to be Luis Robles. It’s the passion that he always shows out on the field and the kindness that he has towards the fans.

OaM: Now onto the more current stuff: With Murillo, Adams, Parker, Escobar and Robles all absent from the next few games, who should Jesse Marsch play to keep the team undefeated?

Kevin M.: I think our depth will be ready. Players like Etienne, Muyl, Collin, Lade, and Rivas should be up for the challenge. I would also love to see Cristian Casseres get a chance in these games.

OaM: Finally, and perhaps most important of all: Do you think Ignacio Pussetto will be a Red Bull?

Kevin M.: I would love to have Pussetto. His chemistry with Kaku would be great and would bring the team to another level. Hopefully the deal gets done!

Many thanks to Kevin for his time and thoughts on RBNY.
