Mere weeks after securing a one-time FIFA allegiance switch from Argentina to Paraguay, New York Red Bulls midfielder Alejandro Romero “Kaku” Gamarra made his debut for La Albirroja in a friendly vs Japan taking place in Austria as part of Japan’s 2018 World Cup preparation.

Coming on as a substitute in the 59th minute for Antonio Bareiro, Kaku quickly made his presence felt with a scintillating cross - only for the ensuing goal to be ruled offsides.

Japan went on to win the game 4-2.

As of writing, Paraguay have no more games scheduled for 2018, so it’s very likely that the Red Bulls won’t need to worry about Kaku being called back to Albirroja camp until preparations for Copa 2019 begin next year.

As for Kaku, there’s no reason to suggest he won’t be back with the team and at full fitness in time for the Open Cup game against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
