RBNY roster news: Luis Robles to start at Columbus on Saturday

He’s back.

MLS: New York City FC at New York Red Bulls Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Luis Robles is back in the lineup.

After several weeks on the sideline due to a knee injury that snapped his 183-game streak of consecutive games started and finished, the Red Bulls captain will be back in goal when the team heads to Ohio for a showdown with Columbus Crew SC.

Head coach Jesse Marsch made the announcement on Thursday afternoon:

Ryan Meara has filled in admirably for Robles during his three-week absence, making crucial saves in a win against Atlanta United in his first start for the team since 2012. He followed up the performance with a shutout against the Philadelphia Union before giving up two goals in a loss at New England last weekend.

However, now that Robles is back and healthy, we should expect Meara to be back on the bench for everything except Open Cup games and friendlies. He recorded his second shutout of the year in the team’s 4-0 win over NYC FC last night.

Ironically, it will be the Crew who are without the services of their top goalkeeper as Zack Steffen joins teammate Wil Trapp in France with Tyler Adams and Tim Parker on the USMNT.
