After some thrilling games in the third round of the US Open Cup by the lower division sides, it was time on Thursday afternoon, for US Soccer to start drawing the winners of the third round and the MLS clubs into the fourth round of the US Open Cup.
After waiting with baited breath on Twitter and in a pool of sides in the Northeast, it was officially shown that the New York Red Bulls would take on the New England Revolution in the fourth round of the US Open Cup.
This means that this will be the first time in two consecutive tournaments that the Red Bulls will not face and host new York City FC, in the fourth round of the tournament. In some ways that is very good to see as this important rivalry needs to stay fresh and hungry, but don’t misunderstand, these games are still important to play.
But one thing is for sure is that it’s nice to mix it up with a different opponent, and now with Bruce Arena back in the game as head coach & general Manager of the Revolution, this contest will now get amped up very quickly.
But the last time the Red Bulls played against a lower division side was back in 2016 as they traveled to Western New York, to take on the Rochester Rhinos, and defeated them by a goal to nil, as Sacha Kljestan’s penalty in the 20th minute was the only tally.
Now for three straight tournaments, the Red Bulls will face an MLS opponent to begin their Open Cup campaign. But it would be nice to see them get another shot at a lower divisional side, which was at the time FC Cincinnati in the Semi-Finals of the 2017 edition.
Still this tournament will be taken seriously and a cup is still on the line for the Red Bulls to earn after three shields in six seasons. Here is the rest of the matchups in the fourth round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
UPDATE: The match has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 11th at the Montclair State University Soccer Park, Start time is at 7:30PM and broadcasted on ESPN+
