Yesterday afternoon, in a historic day for the club’s eMLS branch, the Red Bulls’ own George Adamou won the 2020 eMLS Cup.

Adamou, a Queens native signed by the club in December, did so in impressive fashion by stringing together 4 straight victories. On his way to the championship, he notably took down Sporting Kansas City’s Alekzandur in the first round, before squaring off with, and defeating, reigning champion Fiddle of Cincinnati FC in the quarterfinals. He then proceeded to dispatch Remimartinn of LAFC, as well as crosstown rival NYCFC’s Didiychrislito in the semi-final and final respectively.

Adamou’s matches were packed with tense intrigue as well. Against Fiddle, who had previously defeated the Queens native in the League Series One final, a nervy 0-0 draw after 120’ meant the match would be decided by a penalty kick shootout. In the Hudson River Derby final against Didiychrislito, a 2-2 scoreline at the end of 2 legs once again meant extra time would be required. In both instances Adamou kept his cool, taking down the FC Cincinnati representative 4-3 in penalties, and then in the final calmly finding the back of the net with Diego Rossi in the 98th minute to take down NYCFC and secure city bragging rights.

With his victory, Adamou takes home $12,000 in prize money, as well as his (and the club’s) first eMLS Cup. Congratulations George!
