Schmoll also played this summer for the New York Red Bulls U23 team, where he started most of the season as a centerback. He appeared 12 times, good for fourth on the team in minutes.
Schmoll is a hulking defender who is strong in the air and in the tackle. He is likely to continue to feature as centerback for NYRBII, despite appearing as both a defender and a midfielder in college. One benefit of his appearances as midfielder is that it has allowed him to develop quality on the ball skills, especially for a player of his size.
With the signing of Scholl, New York's USL team has increased its roster to 6, with Konrad Plewa, Devon 'Speedy' Williams, Rafa Diaz, Stefano Bonomo, and Dan Metzger already on the roster.
