They are happy with where they are.

The New York Red Bulls entered the 2016 MLS SuperDraft with only two picks. The 18th pick in the first and second rounds (18th & 36th overall).

They had traded their fourth round pick, which was confirmed earlier this week, when they had acquired the discovery rights to Kemar Lawrence. They traded their natural third round pick to Toronto FC as part of their late 2013 deal for Bobby Convey. They then seemed to trade the same third round pick to acquire Kyle Reynish from Chicago. That pick was then identified as having originally belonging to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

All of this leaves the Red Bulls with only two picks in the 2016 draft. Despite the two draft picks and six recent homegrown signings, would the Red Bulls look to trade their way back into the late rounds of the draft?

The answer is no. The team does have prospects in the draft that they would like to have with them, but don't seem willing to leverage what they have to get them.

"There's a couple of other interesting players out there that we like, " said Jesse Marsch on Thursday " are hopeful that they don't get drafted."

The second half of the 2016 draft will be conducted via teleconference. That will be held on January 19th.

Reactions from the player, Jesse, and Curtis.

Zachory Carroll

How do you feel to be drafted by the Red Bulls?

It feels awesome, it's a dream come true. I can't think of a more perfect team to come to.

Why is that?

Everyone loves the big city. Pro soccer has been what I have wanted to do my whole life. To be able to make the next move is just an unreal experience.

How do you feel you'll fit in with RBNY's backline?

I think it'll be a great fit. The older guys will help me learn and move forward with my career, and the young guys too who have been there and, I think it'll be a perfect fit for me.

Style of play

I'm a very calm player on the ball. I like playing out of the back. A big strong defender, I like using my body and winning header. Also, just the knack of making plays, whether it's goal line clearances or big shots.

Jesse Marsch

How do you envision the backline coming together, especially with Perrinelle & Duvall injuries?

Well, we have depth, and now certainly with these two additions it makes it even deeper. Damien we hope will be ready by the end of May, so, you know, Zac helps us bolster that depth until we get Damien back. Both Karl Ouimette and Matt Miazga have national team responsibilities at different times. We think Chris Duvall will be back and be healthy and ready to go for preseason. So, all in all when you look at the back line now we have been able to solidify most of the positions and feel like moving forward, we have good youth that will be ready in a few years to start to take things over.

Ali Curtis

Do you think you are happy with what you were able to get at the draft today?

Yes, we're very excited, we were able to bring aboard the players that we were. So we're very excited. We going to have a lot of competition at a lot of different spots come preseason and it should be a lot of fun. A lot of youth that we are bringing into the team so it's very exciting.

Are the two defenders you drafted any indication about Miazga leaving?

We actually had a lot of the homegrown players that we signed, they either played midfield or striker. So, you know, if you take those guys coupled in with who we drafted, it's a pretty balanced group. So that was really the thinking that went into the players that we drafted and where they played.

What do you like about the guys you picked today?

Well, first and foremost we think they're good guys. You know, really good human beings that can fit well with our group and also in the locker room, and so first and foremost they're good guys and we like what they can do. They're good soccer players, we're looking forward to getting them into preseason to start that process so it should be a lot of fun, and they should fit the way we play very well so we have to get them going into preseason.

What about Zac impressed you?

We know Zac very well, we have been following him for a while. He actually played for the same youth club that I played for. We know a lot of guys in the Michigan/Michigan State area, just from local connections. He's big, he's strong, he's good in the tackle, so we'll have to get him up to speed on exactly the way we play, our style of play, but we think he can be a really talented player, and he has a lot of upside. So, he'll have to earn it for sure but we think really highly of him.

How did Jesse Marsch and Ali Curtis react?

Jesse Marsch

How do you feel about the selection?

Yea, um, as you can see, there's been a lot of movement in this draft, so there's a lot of conversations flying around at the tables. You know, at the end, we kind of stayed put with our pick and this was the player we targeted. So we were happy he was still available. The one thing that we were just trying to survey was to you know, take the pick, whether there was a way of still thinking about move down and if he might still be available. We're happy to have him. He has flexibility, it adds to our defensive depth. So, you know, Justin Bilyeu will be a good addition to the Red Bulls this year.

Are the Red Bulls targeting the back line?

You know, we feel really good about our roster in general, we have depth at every position. Clearly, now with signing these homegrowns we've added even more depth. We like our team, we like our balance, it's just about trying to find one or two pieces that we think add a little bit more.

Does the draft change with now having 7 college players (homegrowns)?

Yea, it does change for us a little bit. It doesn't make it obsolete, because there's still the ability to pick up a good player, but I think there's less emphasis on figuring out exactly what the right fit is for a number of reasons. Certainly the fact we have the homegrowns coming through the system now, I think they are going to be big contributors.

Did you think about moving up?

A little bit, but not, you know, we didn't want to leverage too much within our resources and our roster because we feel really good about what we have. Again, we're glad Justin was available at this pick, and it's what we wanted.

Look to trade the 2nd round pick or focus on defensive midfield depth?

Well, we won't look at defensive midfield depth because we feel like we're really good there. We probably won't trade it, and probably would look to again bolster our defensive unit. So, we'll see, we have a couple of targets that we're hoping make it to the late stages of the next round and will be available at that point.

Does the 2nd year feel more comfortable than the 1st?

I feel like last year the combine and draft last year weren't so much about the combine and draft so much about the other work that had to be done. This year, it feels like we're much more in control of exactly what's happening in the moment, instead of the concern of a million other things on our mind. But still, we know we have a big task ahead of us and we're excited to get the year started.

Miazga's future

Right now, Matt's with our team and there's been some discussion about potential opportunities for Matt moving forward, but I don't think anything that's even close to concrete. So, as of right now, I'm counting on him being a Red Bull in 2016.

Tim Sebastian

We're always trying to figure out with our subsidiaries at Leipzig and Salzburg how to have a good relationship and share resources, and if that's players that would be great too. So, we had an interest in Tim Sebastian, I think he had an interest in coming here. In the end he found a situation for him at [SC] Paderborn that will be very good for him. I mean, we'll see, there's potential for there to be more sharing of players in the future.

Homegrown Players in Germany

The feedback is that Tyler Adams and Sean Davis have done really well there, which doesn't surprise us, we think very highly of them. It's a great experience for them to have to be over there and be exposed to the level of play there and you know again we'll find way to continue to share resources.

Ali Cutris

How did homegrowns change your direction and philosophy

Well, I think the good thing is we signed a lot of our homegrown players that otherwise would have been what we believe are top draft picks. So, a lot of them midfielders and forwards, so, with that you kind of look at an emphasis of potentially looking at the back line.

Talks with Seattle

Just going back and forth on a couple of different options. I want to be respectful of Seattle and not disclose what they shared with us, and I'm sure they'll reciprocate.

Difference of approach to draft given settled team in 2016

You know, every year is different, and every year you have unique challenges. Last year, we were in a situation where we needed to build the roster and build the team, acquire the players and things like that. This year, the challenge is just bringing the team back. You know, you still go out and push and drive to really get value out of the draft. You know, have the conversations you need to have in order to be able to select the best player available. This year we went out, and went out hard and at the end of the day we feel really good about our pick.

On the amount of homegrowns and how that'll work every year

Our commitment to youth development I think will only get stronger. But I do think this was a unique year. Not many clubs will go out and be able to sign the number of homegrown players, and we won't either, you know every off-season. We're still going to have the same approach of trying to embrace youth development, sign younger players from our academy and bring them in our system. But you know, gotta be honest, this was a pretty big year in that regards.

Will younger players have the opportunity to play on the senior team?

Everyone knows from the staff to the players, we want a competitive environment and we gotta bring youth into our system and so they're going to come into preseason, we start in Orlando, and compete. We expect a lot out of them as we expect out of all of our players. They'll get a fair shot, an equal opportunity, and we're looking forward to seeing how they kind of mesh in with the group we have now.

Miazga's current status

He's on our roster. He's on our roster and in national team camp. So, you know, that's where we are with that. He's under contract until the end of the year.

Tim Sebastian

I'm probably a little bit more open about this than I would with other players because he's a guy that's kind of within our family. But we did have an interest in Tim, a talented player that really wasn't playing as much with Leipzig right now and you know we have a really close relationship with all our teams. At the end of the day, I don't think it's going to be a situation that works out, and he's going to move on and we wish him the very best.

Do members of the Red Bull family reach out to RBNY, or is Sebastian a player RBNY targeted?

I talk regularly with the guys at Salzburg and all the guys in Leipzig and Brazil, so we talk about scouting, we talk about tactics, talk about best practices, coaches, players. So, as you think about, you look at the chemistry of our team, you look at the makeup, maybe strengthening the back line was an emphasis. So, looking at their team, looking at a couple of other teams, a couple of the targets, seemed like a situation that might make sense, at the end of the day, it did not work out.

In the second round, New York selects Zach Carroll out of Michigan State with the 38th pick

After adding defensive depth in the first round of the Super Draft, the New York Red Bulls went on to add onto that in the second round, drafting Zach Carroll at 38th overall.

A 6' 3" centerback, Carroll played his college ball at Michigan State University after transferring from Virginia, featuring 38 times over his Junior and Senior year, scoring 7 times and assisting 4 times. During his first two years at Virgina, Carroll played 24 times for the Cavaliers, scoring 4 times, assisting on 3.

At Michigan State, Carroll earned First Team All-Big 10 honors as a senior, while also earning NSCAA Second Team All-Midwest in 2015 and Third Team All-Midwest in 2014. Carroll is a US youth international, and is seen as a strong, steady, stay at home centerback, and should add youth and depth a Red Bull's center defensive group whose future appears to be uncertain at the moment.

At the end of the first round, the Red Bulls selects Justin Bilyeu out of SIU

The New York Red Bulls stayed put as a flurry of trades took place during the start of the MLS draft. Then with the 18th pick in the draft New York selected Justin Bilyeu, a leftback out of Southern Illinois University.

Over four years Bilyeu played 59 times, scoring 5 goals, assisting on 7 more. A leftback by trade, the 6' 4" Bilyeu has also played in the center of defense and occasionally on the leftwing. The 21 year-old is known for his speed on the flanks, while being able to play a two-way game from the fullback position.

Bilyeu was named Third Team All-West Region by the NSCAA and Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference in 2015, while also being named Second Team All-Missouri Valley in 2014 as well. Bilyeu will support Kemar Lawrence and Connor Lade on the left side of defense while also providing potential centerback depth for the team.
