The Red Bulls sprouted wings in Week 20 and flew into the top 10 of the Power Rankings.

A bit of reset this week as NYFC takes over top spot and LA sinks ever closer to rock-bottom of the Rankings...

1. New York City FC (up two places)

37 points, 3rd in Eastern Conference

3rd in Supporters' Shield race

Last results: NYCFC 2-2 Toronto (July 19); NYCFC 2-1 Chicago (July 22)

Four points from two home games is decent, but not exceptional. Still, NYCFC welcomed the two top teams in the league to Yankee Stadium in Week 20, and sent both home with something to think about. The team will see Toronto again in Week 21 - in Toronto this time - and the result of that game will go some way to deciding whether NYCFC spends any significant time at the top of these Rankings.

2. Toronto FC (no movement)

40 points, 1st in East

1st in Shield race

Last results: NYCFC 2-2 TFC (July 19); TFC 1-1 Colorado (July 22)

TFC has been hit a little harder than most teams by Gold Cup, with a slew of players donated to the group stage, and a couple of stars - Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley - called up by the USA for the knockout rounds. In that context, two ties from a double-game week isn't bad at all.

3. Chicago Fire (down two places)

38 points, 2nd in East

2nd in Shield race

Last result: NYCFC 2-1 Chicago

The Fire's unbeaten streak was ended at 11 games by a spirited NYCFC. Most likely, the result is simply a blip for what looks to be an increasingly confident and consistent team. For now, however, the loss sees Chicago take a step or two down from the top of the Rankings.

4. Atlanta United (up one place)

33 points, 4th in East

5th in Shield race

Last result: Orlando 0-1 Atlanta

Atlanta has the longest active winning streak in MLS - four games - with the team it just beat on the road (Orlando) coming to visit in Week 21.

5. FC Dallas (up two places)

34 points, 1st in Western Conference

4th in Shield race

Last result: Montreal 1-2 FCD

Dallas' slump is well and truly over: the team has lost just one of its last eight league games, won its last three outings in MLS, and is back at the top of the West.

6. Seattle Sounders (up two places)

30 points, 5th in West

11th in Shield race

Last results: Seattle 4-3 DCU (July 19); Seattle 3-0 San Jose (July 23)

Seven goals and two wins in one week is quite the display of power.

7. Sporting Kansas City (down three places)

33 points, 2nd in West

6th in Shield race

Last result: RSL 1-1 KC

KC is unbeaten in its last seven league games, but it has only won two of those - and it has tied its last three matches in MLS. It is doing just fine, lurking on the edge of the Shield race and well established in the race for the Western Conference title, but three consecutive draws isn't the way to advance in the Power Rankings.

8. New York Red Bulls (up eight places)

32 points, 5th in East

7th in Shield race

Last results: RBNY 5-1 San Jose (July 19); Minnesota 0-3 RBNY (July 22)

Welcome back to the Power Rankings' top 10, RBNY. Back-to-back wins by an aggregate score of 8-1 is perhaps the most power the Red Bulls have shown all year.

9. Houston Dynamo (no movement)

32 points, 3rd in West

8th in Shield race

Last results: Minnesota 0-0 Houston (July 19); DCU 1-3 Houston (July 22)

Four points from back-to-back road games is arguably worth a little more than simply holding position on this list; Houston has a case for being harshly treated by the Rankings this week.

10. Vancouver Whitecaps (down three places)

27 points, 6th in West

13th in Shield race

Last results: LA 0-1 VWFC (July 19); VWFC 1-2 Portland (July 23)

Winning in LA was good, losing at home was not so good: on balance, the Rankings thinks Vancouver needs to drop for those points dropped at home.

20 points, 10th in West

20th in Shield race

Last result: Toronto 1-1 Colorado

A point on the road in Toronto is a good enough result for Colorado to hold steady this week.

12. Montreal Impact (no movement)

24 points, 8th in East

16th in Shield race

Last results: Montreal 2-1 Philadelphia (July 19); Montreal 1-2 FCD (July 22)

A win-one-lose-one week for Montreal in what continues to be a win-some-lose-some season for the team.

13. Columbus Crew (up two places)

31 points, 6th in East

9th in Shield race

Last result: Columbus 1-0 Philadelphia

The Crew has won three of its last four games, and could argue it is being undervalued by the Rankings at the moment. It has a three-game road trip starting in Week 21, so the chance to prove the Rankings wrong is arrived.

14. Real Salt Lake (up three places)

24 points, 8th in West

15th in Shield race

Last results: Portland 1-4 RSL (July 19); RSL 1-1 KC (July 22)

RSL is unbeaten in three games, with 12 goals scored in that run. The club's off-field power was boosted in Week 20 by Mike Petke's magnificent post-match rant about refereeing standards in MLS - complete with hand-outs.

15. Philadelphia Union (down five places)

23 points, 9th in East

17th in Shield race

Last results: Montreal 2-1 Philadelphia (July 19); Columbus 1-0 Philadelphia (July 22)

The Union has struggled on the road for most of the season, and Week 20 was no different.

16. Portland Timbers (up four places)

30 points, 4th in West

10th in Shield race

Last results: Portland 1-4 RSL (July 19); VWFC 1-2 Portland (July 23)

A big jump up the Rankings for a team that lost 4-1 at home to RSL. But RSL is starting to resemble a good team, and the win in Vancouver made it clear that the Timbers aren't nearly as troubled as several other sides in MLS at the moment.

17. San Jose Earthquakes (down three places)

14th in Shield race

Last results: RBNY 5-1 San Jose (July 19); Seattle 3-0 San Jose (July 23)

San Jose closed out a calamitous three-game road trip with back-to-back losses. The Quakes have lost three in a row - outscored 12-3 - and rather urgently need a return to form on their home field in Week 21.

18. New England Revolution (up three places)

23 points, 10th in East

18th in Shield race

Last result: Revs 4-3 LA

We learned this week that the Revs can at least beat LA. That seems to be true for most teams in the league, but it is at least worth a bounce up the Rankings - for now.

19. Orlando City (no movement)

29 points, 7th in East

12th in Shield race

Last result: Orlando 0-1 Atlanta

Orlando has won twice in MLS since the beginning of May. All that can be said for it at the moment is that there are other teams with worse problems - but not many.

20. Minnesota United (down two places)

Last results: Minnesota 0-0 Houston (July 19); Minnesota 0-3 RBNY (July 22)

Minnesota hasn't scored in three straight games - and all of those were played at home. It is also on a five-game winless streak. The Loons would appear to have lost their way.

19th in Shield race

Last results: LA 0-1 Vancouver (July 19); New England 4-3 LA (July 22)

LA is now on a five-game losing streak - and it faces in-form Seattle in Week 21.

22nd in Shield race

Last results: Seattle 4-3 DCU (July 19); DCU 1-3 Houston (July 22)

There are still many games to play in MLS, so it will be a few more weeks yet before we find out whether it is fair to say DC's loss to Seattle - during which it coughed up a three-goal lead - was the moment 2017 became a lost cause for the team.

NYCFC slips a place, but its next three league games are against the two teams above it in these Rankings. The chance to bounce back up the list will come quickly.

Back-to-back losses should probably drop the Rapids out of the top 10 altogether, but the current bottom team in the league is only a week removed from being among the hottest in MLS. An away win makes it eight league games unbeaten for Chicago - and gives it another week at the top of this list.

The Revs have played the top three teams on this list in their last three games, and only lost once - which is why they're still a top 10 team despite losing at home this week.

The Rankings prefer not to see teams rise with a draw, but are forced to concede that L'Impact's current form - four games unbeaten; one loss in the last six league outings - is worth a step up on this list.

The Dynamo got a good result this week, and it could have been better - LA needed a late (and perhaps offside) equalizer to grab a point. But Houston has also only won once in its last six league games.

NYCFC is starting to show signs of a challenge to the Rankings' breakaway top two.

No change at the top, but the rest of the table is churning...

1. Toronto FC (no movement)

29 points, 1st in Eastern Conference

1st in Supporters' Shield race

Last result: New England 3-0 TFC

TFC picked a good week to lose: its closest challengers in the Power Rankings didn't really do enough to justify taking over top spot. The seven-wins-in-eight-games stretch preceding this week's loss to the Revs is sufficient to keep TFC at the top of this list for another week, at least.

2. Chicago Fire (no movement)

25 points, 2nd in East

3rd in Shield race

Last result: Orlando 0-0 Chicago

A scoreless draw traditionally isn't enough to rise in the Rankings, but a clean sheet on the road and a six-game unbeaten streak is also no reason to fall. The Fire holds steady.

3. New York City FC (up two places)

Last results: NYCFC 2-2 Revs (May 31); NYCFC 2-1 Union (June 3)

The 2-2 tie against the Revs looked a little better after New England trampled Toronto, and there is still credit to be gained for beating Philadelphia - one of the hotter teams in MLS as recently as two weeks ago.

4. LA Galaxy (down one place)

Last week, the Caps suffered a scandalous loss to DC courtesy of a blatant dive; this week, they took their frustrations out on Atlanta.

7th in Shield race

Last result: FCD 6-2 RSL

A big home win over a weak opponent isn't sufficient to persuade the Rankings that FCD has put its recent slump in form behind it for good, but it does suggest the team is on the rise again.

7. New England Revolution (up four places)

Last results: NYCFC 2-2 Revs (May 31); Revs 3-0 TFC (June 3)

Four points from a double-game week that required going up against two of the better teams in the league is comfortably sufficient for the Revs to step back into the top 10 on this list.

8. Sporting Kansas City (up one place)

Last results: Columbus 3-0 Seattle (May 31); Seattle 1-0 Houston (June 4)

An up-and-down week for Seattle, but the Sounders did enough to stay ahead of on-the-rise again Houston.

6th in Shield race

Last results: Houston 5-1 RSL; Seattle 1-0 Houston

The loss to Seattle prevents the Dynamo from rising back into the top 10, but the big win over RSL is good for at least a nudge up the Rankings.

12. Philadelphia Union (down eight places)

17th in Shield race

Last result: NYCFC 2-1 Philadelphia

Back-to-back losses now for Philadelphia, and the Rankings start to worry that the team is heading back into the sort of form that saw it start the season with an eight-game winless streak. Fortunately for the Union, its next match is at home against RBNY (on June 17) - and it was a home match against the Red Bulls that saw it out its last slump.

The Red Bulls are terrible on the road, as demonstrated by this week's result: the team's sixth consecutive road loss and the fourth straight away game in which it has failed to score.

1st in Supporters' Shield race

Last result: TFC 5-0 Columbus

There will be a week when TFC drops off the top spot of the Power Rankings, but not the week it extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 5-0 win over a team many expect to see in this year's playoffs.

2. Chicago Fire (up three places)

24 points, 2nd in East

2nd in Shield race

Last result: Chicago 2-1 FCD

Longest active winning streak and a win over suddenly-slumping FC Dallas: Chicago is unlucky TFC's form is so remarkable, because most week a team enjoying the Fire's current run would be top of this list.

3. LA Galaxy (up six places)

17 points, 6th in Western Conference

13th in Shield race

Last result: San Jose 2-4 LA

The Galaxy has won three games in a row on the road: in MLS, that is a lot of power.

4. Philadelphia Union (down two places)

15th in Shield race

Last result: RSL 1-0 Union

Philadelphia had won four in a row before this week's loss to RSL, so the Rankings are cutting the team a little slack.

5. New York City FC (down two places)

20 points, 3rd in East

4th in Shield race

Last result: Atlanta 3-1 NYCFC

NYCFC has only won one of its last four, but all of those games were on the road. The Rankings want to see what a return home does for the team.

6. Vancouver Whitecaps (no movement)

16 points, 6th in West

14th in Shield race

Last result: VWFC 0-1 DC

Vancouver lost in Week 13 because the referee was duped into awarding a penalty - which even managed to get the Disciplinary Committee's attention. To add insult to that injury by dropping the Caps down this list seems a step too far. Vancouver holds steady in Week 13.

7. FC Dallas (down three places)

20 points, 3rd in West

8th in Shield race

Last results: Chicago 2-1 FCD (May 25); FCD 0-0 Houston (May 28)

There's no excuse for a team that has two points from its last four games - and three of those played at home - being in the top 10 of this list, other than it's hard to make a case for promoting many teams above FCD at the moment. It was a bad week for Dallas, but it happened to be a bad week for a lot of the teams around it in the Rankings as well.

8. Atlanta United (up four places)

18 points, 7th in East

11th in Shield race

Last result: Atlanta 3-1 NYCFC

Atlanta United's second win in a row - and this one over a team thought to be among the best in the early stages of MLS 2017 - is worth a place in the top 10.

9. Sporting Kansas City (down two places)

22 points, 1st in West

3rd in Shield race

Last result: Colorado 1-0 KC

KC's second loss in a row should maybe be worth a bigger slide down the Rankings, but its last win was over Seattle, so it can settle in above the Sounders for now.

10. Seattle Sounders (up eight places)

16 points, 8th in West

17th in Shield race

Last result: Sounders 1-0 Portland

Back-to-back 1-0 home wins over slumping opponents isn't the most convincing form, but the Sounders stand out from the crowd in what was a poor week for a lot of supposedly better teams.

11. New England Revolution (down one place)

16 points, 9th in East

16th in Shield race

Last result: RBNY 2-1 Revs

The Revs have a tough schedule ahead: NYCFC in New York, followed by a three-game stretch against the two hottest teams in MLS (Toronto twice; Chicago once). So this modest step down the Rankings might be the start of big fall.

12. Houston Dynamo (up one place)

20 points, 2nd in West

5th in Shield race

Last result: FCD 0-0 Houston

The Rankings tend to take the view that a scoreless draw is not a sign of power, but this scoreless draw was Houston's first road point of the season - and it was against the pre-season favorite to win the Supporters' Shield. If the Dynamo has figured out how to stop losing on the road, the rest of the league had best take notice.

13. Minnesota United (up three places)

14 points, 9th in West

19th in Shield race

Last result: Minnesota 1-0 Orlando

This week's win probably said more about Orlando's weaknesses than Minnesota's strengths, but credit where it's due: these are the sort of games - at home against slumping visitors from far away - the Expansion United should be winning, and winning when you're supposed to win is a sign of power.

14. New York Red Bulls (up five places)

7th in Shield race

Last result: RBNY 2-1 Revs

The big jump up the Rankings is more an acknowledgement that last week's evaluation was a little harsh than the suggestion winning a home game against New England is all that impressive.

15. Montreal Impact (no movement)

21st in Shield race

Last result: IMFC 4-1 Portland (May 20)

L'Impact didn't play this week and therefore stands still.

19 points, 4th in West

10th in Shield race

Last result: SJ 2-4 LA

The Rankings really have no idea what to make of San Jose. Last week, the Quakes beat FCD on the road: top 10 team! This week, they lost to LA at home: not a top 10 team!

17. Columbus Crew (down six places)

19 points, 6th in East

9th in Shield race

Last result: TFC 5-0 Crew

Big drop for this week's big loss to TFC. Being worse than TFC is the perspective of pretty much all of MLS at the moment, so the Rankings won't hold this result against the Crew for long.

18. Real Salt Lake (up two places)

20th in Shield race

Last result: RSL 1-0 Philadelphia

RSL second win in its last three games, and its second win over a team that had been playing well before visiting Utah. Whisper it, but things might be looking up for RSL.

22nd in Shield race

Last result: Rapids 1-0 KC

Beating KC is impressive and Colorado has another three in a row to play at home coming up. Big chance for the Rapids to rise up this list over the next few weeks.

20. Portland Timbers (down four places)

12th in Shield race

Last result: Seattle 1-0 Portland

That's a five-game winless streak for the Timbers now, and just two wins in their last 10 league games.
