Once upon a time Hans Backe said Tyler Lassiter was further ahead in his development than Tim Ream at his age, setting the bar high for the young defender.
Now Lassiter, who logged roughly zero regular season minutes with the Bulls this year, is out. With him Alex Horwath, Mike Jones, Marcos Paullo, John Rooney and Teddy Schneider after the Red Bulls waived the lot of them Friday.
Only one player - Horwath - started a game and the remainder of the six, only Jones and Rooney appeared in games according to ESPN.com stats.
Aside from Paullo, the move doesn't clear much in the way of salary either, with Schneider, Horwath, Lassiter and Jones making all of $4 above the league minimum for reserve players, though shaking Paullo's $82,000 salary will be welcome. All told, the team took roughly $270,000 off its books.
Nothing major, and with Backe's subbing habits their replacements shouldn't expect too many minutes, though it will be interesting to see how Soler will fill those spots with most of their draft picks sent Toronto FC's way for Dwayne DeRosario.
