Report: New York Red Bulls giving Gaelic football star a crack at soccer

A report from Brendan Crossan for the Irish News advises that the New York Red Bulls have 27-year-old Irishman Jamie Clarke on trial.

Clarke is a star player in Ireland - but not in the sport RBNY plays. He's known for his ability in Gaelic football. But he moved away from Ireland and the top-level of the game he knows best to be in New York this year.

Clarke was reportedly offered contracts with soccer teams before he moved over to the USA, but stuck with his decision to cross the Atlantic.

The Irish News reports Clarke will find out if he has a contract with RBNY in November. The report states he has been training with NYRB II, and it might be fair to assume that a 27-year-old with no prior experience as a soccer pro is not going to walk on to the first team. If Clarke even makes the reserves, it will be a surprise (he's a little old for the Red Bulls' development squad). But kudos to the RBNY front office for thinking laterally, and continuing to explore unexpected avenues in the search for fresh ideas and new talent for the roster.
