The first semifinal of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League features Vancouver Whitecaps and Tigres UANL. In the first leg of that match-up, Vancouver went to Mexico and was sent home with a 2-0 loss. It looks a hard task for the Caps to bounce back from that result in the second leg.
The second semifinal also features a Liga MX team and one from MLS. But in this series, it is the MLS side that will play at home first. FC Dallas is the lower seed in this match-up - playing away in the second leg is technically a disadvantage - but the team made good use of the series format in the quarterfinals, when it was also the lower seed. Against Panamanian club Arabe Unido, FCD won the first leg 4-0. That result effectively won the series, and Dallas was able to see out the quarterfinal with a 2-1 loss in Panama.
Dallas fans hoping for a similar result against Pachuca might be disappointed, but certainly the FCD game-plan remains the same: win at home, and hope it is by a sufficient margin to weather the inevitable storm in Mexico in the second leg.
