New York Red Bulls draw Philadelphia Union in fifth round of 2017 US Open Cup

Third time lucky for RBNY against Philly in USOC?

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

US Soccer completed the draw for the fifth round of the 2017 US Open Cup on the morning of June 15.

The New York Red Bulls were in the hat thanks to their 1-0 win over New York City FC on June 14. US Soccer regionalizes the draw for USOC in an effort to control travel costs and boost local rivalries. As such, it was expected RBNY would be facing of the I-95 corridor teams in the fifth round: D.C. United, New England Revolution, or Philadelphia Union.

The draw matched the Red Bulls with Philadelphia Union because of course it did. The Union has bounced RBNY out of the last two editions of USOC. Philly won a penalty shoot-out at Red Bull Arena in the quarterfinals of USOC 2015; last year's humbling took place in the fifth round at the Union's Talen Energy Stadium.

The teams are penciled in to play this year's match at Red Bull Arena on June 28.
