Congrats, Speedy!

First team to win back-to-back USL Cups, second team to win USL Cup twice, and third consecutive USL Cup for Devon “Speedy” Williams: Didier Drogba picked an historic game to be the (maybe) last of his pro career.

Drogba is a legend in his own lifetime and will be the deserving recipient of many fine tributes when he confirms his retirement from professional soccer. Once A Metro’s interest in the 2018 USL Cup final, however, is focused on the other legend who played in the match: Devon “Speedy” Williams - now the winner of three straight USL Cups.

Williams came off the bench for Louisville City in the 70th minute, shortly after teammate Luke Spencer scored the game’s only goal. Subbing in to the final gave Williams the full spectrum of USL Cup Final experiences: in 2016, he won his first Cup with NYRB II, but injury kept him off the pitch for that game; in 2017, he started and played the full 90 minutes in Louisville’s 1-0 win over Swope Park Rangers; in 2018, he joined the match from the bench. They all count the same: three straight seasons as a USL Cup winner - congrats, Speedy!
