MLS 2017 Power Rankings, Week 15: Chicago Fire takes over top spot

Toronto didn't play, and the Fire took full advantage,

Scott Kane-USA TODAY Sports

Only three games played in Week 15, but that's sufficient for a change at the top.

1. Chicago Fire (up one place)
  • 28 points, 2nd in Eastern Conference
  • 2nd in Supporters' Shield race
  • Last result: Chicago 2-0 Atlanta
You snooze, you lose: TFC drops a place for no better reason than it didn't play in Week 15 and Chicago did. Also, the Fire extended its unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games.

2. Toronto FC (down one place)

  • 29 points, 1st in East
  • 1st in Shield race
  • Last result: New England 3-0 TFC (June 3)
TFC takes a week off and a step back to allow the Fire a moment to shine.

3. New York City FC (no movement)
  • 24 points, 3rd in East
  • 4th in Shield race
  • Last results: NYCFC 2-2 Revs (May 31); NYCFC 2-1 Union (June 3)
Another team becalmed in Week 15.

4. LA Galaxy (no movement)
  • 18 points, 8th in Western Conference
  • 16th in Shield race
  • Last result: DCU 0-0 LA (June 3)
Nothing to see here.

5. Vancouver Whitecaps (up one place)
  • 19 points, 5th in West
  • 12th in Shield race
  • Last result: VWFC 3-1 Atlanta (June 3)
Nothing to see here either.

6. Sporting Kansas City (up two places)
  • 26 points, 1st in West
  • 3rd in Shield race
  • Last result: KC 1-1 Montreal
Hard to justify FCD holding on to sixth in the Rankings after losing to Portland this week, so KC gets a not-really-deserved promotion for a modest draw at home - largely to fill the gap created by Dallas' fall.

7. New England Revolution (no movement)
  • 20 points, 7th in East
  • 11th in Shield race
  • Last results: NYCFC 2-2 Revs (May 31); Revs 3-0 TFC (June 3)
No need to drag the Revs into the argument about whether or not FCD deserves to fall in this week's Rankings - New England stays put this week.

8. FC Dallas (down two places)
  • 23 points, 4th in West
  • 9th in Shield race
  • Last result: Portland 2-0 FCD
FCD has only won two of its last eight games - and both of those wins were over RSL. It's starting to feel like Dallas isn't a top team in the league.

9. Seattle Sounders (no movement)
  • 19 points, 7th in West
  • 14th in Shield race
  • Last results: Columbus 3-0 Seattle (May 31); Seattle 1-0 Houston (June 4)
Holding steady after a week of inactivity.

10. Montreal Impact (up three places)
  • 17 points, 9th in East
  • 17th in Shield race
  • Last result: SKC 1-1 IMFC
Shocking jump up the Rankings after a mere draw, but it was a point on the road against the top team in the West - and Montreal is now unbeaten in three straight games.

11. Houston Dynamo (no movement)
  • 23 points, 3rd in West
  • 7th in Shield race
  • Last results: Houston 5-1 RSL (May 31); Seattle 1-0 Houston (June 4)
Nothing to report from Houston in Week 15.

12. Philadelphia Union (no movement)
  • 16 points, 10th in East
  • 18th in Shield race
  • Last result: NYCFC 2-1 Philadelphia (June 3)
The Union holds its position for another week.

13. Atlanta United (down three places)
  • 18 points, 8th in East
  • 15th in Shield race
  • Last result: Chicago 2-0 Atlanta
Back-to-back losses see Atlanta drop out of the top 10.

14. Portland Timbers (up three places)
  • 24 points, 2nd in West
  • 5th in Shield race
  • Last result: Portland 2-0 Dallas
Second consecutive win for Portland this week, and this one was over a team still regarded as one of this year's Shield and MLS Cup contenders.

15. Orlando City (down one place)
  • 24 points, 4th in East
  • 6th in Shield race
  • Last results: OCSC 2-0 DCU (May 31); OCSC 0-0 Chicago (June 4)
Nudged down by Portland's rise.

16. Colorado Rapids (down one place)
  • 13 points, 11th in West
  • 22nd in Shield race
  • Last result: Colorado 2-1 Columbus (June 3)
Another team displaced by Portland's leap up the Rankings.

17. Columbus Crew (down one place)
  • 22 points, 5th in East
  • 9th in Shield race
  • Last results: Crew 3-0 Sounders (May 31); Colorado 2-1 Crew (June 3)
Last week's rise is taken away by a week of inactivity.

18. Minnesota United (no movement)
  • 14 points, 9th in West
  • 20th in Shield race
  • Last result: KC 3-0 Minnesota (June 3)
At least another week before Minnesota rises again.

19. New York Red Bulls (no movement)
  • 20 points, 6th in East
  • 10th in the Shield race
  • Last result: IMFC 1-0 RBNY (June 3)
RBNY gets to hold still for a week.

20. San Jose Earthquakes (no movement)
  • 19 points, 6th in West
  • 13th in Shield race
  • Last result: Portland 2-0 SJ (June 2)
Yet another team with no game in Week 15 and no reason to move up or down in the Rankings.

21. Real Salt Lake (no movement)
  • 14 points, 10th in West
  • 21st in Shield race
  • Last results: Houston 5-1 RSL (May 31); Dallas 6-2 RSL (June 3)
Almost want to give RSL a rise in the Rankings for not losing this week. Almost.

22. D.C. United (no movement)
  • 15 points, 11th in East
  • 19th in Shield race
  • Last results: Orlando 2-0 DCU (May 31); DCU 0-0 LA (June 3)
We'll find out if DCU can shake itself out of its funk in Week 16.
