It doesn’t matter what sport you watch and which championship final you are ready to view at home or at the bar, somewhere & somehow those who support a different side than you will make a wager on that championship match and a hand shake will officially make it legal.
Before the Red Bulls began play last Saturday evening at Stade Saputo against the Montreal Impact, there was a big match earlier that afternoon as the UEFA Champions League Final was played in Cardiff, Wales between Italian Serie A champions Juventus & Spanish La Liga Champions Real Madrid.
It was a great match to see two of the top clubs in Europe going after each other and both on historic run as Juventus won another Serie A title going six in a row in their top flight while Real Madrid finally won their La Liga title in five seasons.
But for Real Madrid they were also on a big run themselves and what happened in Cardiff proved why they continue to show that they are the champions of Europe as they took out the Tourino side and won their third straight Champions League title and their twelfth in the clubs history.
While Juventus does have some incredible players and they have done wonderful things in their own right inside Italy, but when you have a major superstar in Portuguese magician Cristiano Ronaldo, that man is the lawn mower and he is just trimming his lawn.
The two goals that gave Real Madrid the title shows how driven he is and how in the world can you stop a man who can play like that, the only one who can match him of course is plying his trade at rival FC Barcelona in Argentine Lionel Messi who has also won his share of titles within Spain & Europe.
Sadly for Juventus and sadly for Juventus supporter as well as an all around nice guy in Glen Cove, Long Island native Mike Grella sadly will now have to pay up all the wagers he made with every single teammate on the New York Red Bulls.
That means the conga line is getting ready to dance towards him as many members of the roster will head over to Grella and slowly show their open hand as he agrees to hand over whatever the bets were called as he has no choice but to pay up.
At training this past Thursday, Grella informed the media about his mistake he made by being so bold to defend his favorite Italian club. “I don’t want to say to much or jinx myself, but I have a wager with almost everyone in the changing room.” said Grella, “They all know I’m a Juventus fan and giving me a hard time saying Real Madrid is going to win.
It got elevated to the point where we threw some money on it and a lot of the guys are lining up and I got a lot on Juventus this weekend so I wish them luck.”
Well Mike. Sadly the luck ran out and now it looks like you are going to have to pay up and lighten the load in the wallet. But we shall see what Grella will do if he decides to make another wager in another big tournament if Italy or the USA if facing a different opponent in the World Cup.
There goes the college fund for the kids.
