The primary objective of the men’s U-20 tournament Venezuela is hosting this November is to give a handful of South American sides - Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela - some well-contested games by which to make decisions about tactics and personnel for the forthcoming 2019 South American Men’s U-20 Championship.
That objective would appear to have been met. Venezuela and Peru won their opening games of the tournament; Ecuador and Bolivia won in the second round of matches. All the teams have tasted both victory and defeat - though Peru only lost to Bolivia on penalties and may well feel a little better about the consistency of its performances than the rest of the field.
New York Red Bulls midfielder Cristian Cassers played the full 90 minutes in Venezuela’s 1-0 win over Bolivia on November 14, and sat out the 1-0 loss to Ecuador on November 16. The principles of squad rotation would suggest he’ll feature against Peru.
