Before the new European season starts up in late August, clubs likes to clean up and reformat their teams over the course of the summer transfer window. In Turkey, historical powerhouse Trabzonspor is apparently looking to rid themselves of 33 year-old striker Oscar Cardozo.
According to Turkish outlet Haberler, the team is looking to sell Cardozo this offseason and have interest from multiple American teams. Apparently, both the New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake are interested, but capturing the striker could require a $5 million transfer fee.
Cardozo first arrived at Trabzonspor in 2014, however, his goal production has fallen off from 20 goals in his first season with the club to only eight in his second. Prior to going to Turkey, the Paraguayan international has scored goals in bunches for Benfica in Portugal and Newell's Old Boys, Lionel Messi's one-time youth club.
As the summer silly season winds into full swing this won't be the last rumor to spring up out of nowhere involving the Red Bulls. However, considering New York's abundance of striking options (Bradley Wright-Phillips, Anatole Abang, Brandon Allen, and Gonzalo Véron are all available for the top stop) and their newfound tendency to shy away from aging players, this rumor isn't exactly the most convincing one.
Forza New York, forza silly season. Onwards and upwards newspapers! You sell those copies!
