Ethan Kutler answered his phone

Potential runaway draft pick crisis averted.

The New York Red Bulls' second pick of the 2017 SuperDraft was a surprise even to the man selected. Ethan Kutler was the 39th pick of the Draft, but he wasn't in attendance - and that meant RBNY had to go looking for him to break the news.

The Red Bulls' second-round pick of the 2015 Draft - Stefano Bonomo - ran away to Europe to see if could find a better opportunity, only returning (to sign for NYRB II) after a succession of trials with lower-league teams in Poland, Italy, and England didn't work out for him.

The brief concern that RBNY might be hunting its second runaway draft pick in three seasons was settled with a post to the club's You Tube channel. Ethan Kutler answered his phone.

The quick chat with head coach Jesse Marsch revealed one of the reasons for the surprise pick: Marsch and Colgate men's soccer head coach Erik Ronning know each other from days working together at Northwestern.

The RBNY head coach did not tell his new prospect that he intends to see if he can convert from forward to right back. Kutler has that experience to look forward to when he gets to the Red Bulls' training camp.
