As the new York Red Bulls are getting ready to face a big test in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the renewed Los Angeles Galaxy, a bit of business was done to to make sure that the left side of the midfield would stay and continue to attack down the flank.
Austrian attacking midfielder Daniel Royer has been given a multiyear contract extension by the New York Red Bulls and that means we will see him performing beyond the 2018 season for the Red Bulls.
“We are pleased to reach an agreement with Danny to extend his time in New York,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett. “Danny fits both our style of play and club culture, and we look forward to him contributing to our continued success.”
Since arriving in the 2016 Summer transfer window Daniel Royer has started in 29 out of 36 games played and converted 13 times in league play and has scored twice in the 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs along with a goal against NYCFC that won their 1st match in the US Open Cup NYC Derby at Red Bull Arena in the fourth round.
“Danny is an integral part of our team, and a player that we think will continue to grow and excel in this league,” said Head Coach Jesse Marsch. “He is gifted around the goal and has the qualities and mindset that are required to play our style on both sides of the ball.”
Royer scored some fantastic goals last season including a couple of braces against the San Jose Earthquakes and the Montreal Impact, that gave him player of the month honors for the month of July.
But his injury at Yankee Stadium last year on Sunday, August 6th took him out of action during the back end of their US Open Cup run. He slipped along the lip of the Left-Centerfield grass and injured his left leg on the warning track by pulling a muscle.
“ A good feeling. Finally it got announced and we found some good solutions, taking my time to think about it having some good conversations during the season so I’m happy to be here for a little bit long.“ said Royer.
“I’ve had some other offers from European clubs from somewhere else in countries that I haven’t played yet, I also knew it had to be something unbelievable to leave this place, I knew about the offer from the Red Bulls of course.
So in the off-season I took some time to discuss this with my family about this. There were some good offers but it had to be amazing to leave this place and I am happy to remain here with the Red Bulls.”
Since the start of his 2018 Season Royer has tallied once in the road trip to face Honduran side CD Olimpia in the 1st leg of the Round of 16 in the CONCACAF Champions League, since that match it’s been bad luck for Daniel Royer either missing the net, nailing the woodwork, coming close on the goal line or a big save by the keeper.
But he has been a big help to the Red Bulls and what they have been trying to do, there are other chances at trophies this season with the US Open Cup, Supporters Shield & MLS Cup still at play for 2018 and Daniel Royer will be apart of it.
So now this little situation or annoyance is over and it’s on for Daniel Royer to try and bite the bagel. He knows that he needs to get back on the score sheet in league play and trying to get back to their winning ways.
