New York Red Bulls vs. Montreal Impact: Live Match Thread

Yeah, I went there. 4-1, like last night, would do nicely.

New York Red Bulls vs. Montreal Impact
The Cathedral of Football, Red Bull Arena, scenic Harrison, NJ
4 PM EDT, Moving Picture Box: MSG

Another weekend, another Red Bulls match. New York takes on the Montreal Impact this afternoon at Red Bull Arena for the second home game of the year.

The Red Bulls are unchanged from the side that took down 4-1 the Colorado Rapids last week. Kenny Cooper again joins Thierry Henry at the top of a flat 4-4-2, with Dax McCarty and Rafa Márquez in the center of midfield. For Montreal, Justin Braun has been dropped to the bench -- thank Juan Pablo for that! -- and it looks like they're setting up in a 4-5-1.

Lineups:

Red Bulls (4-4-2): Ryan Meara; Jan Gunnar Solli, Wilman Conde, Markus Holgersson, Roy Miller; Dane Richards, Dax McCarty, Rafael Marquez, Joel Lindpere; Kenny Cooper, Thierry Henry

Bench: Jeremy Vuolo, Brandon Barklage, Stephen Keel, Connor Lade, Mehdi Ballouchy, Jhonny Arteaga, Teemu Tainio

Impact (4-5-1, I think): Donovan Ricketts, Zarek Valentin, Matteo Ferrari, Tyson Wahl, Josh Gardner, Davy Arnaud, Patrice Bernier, Felipe, Justin Mapp, Sanna Nyassi, Bernardo Corradi

Bench: Red Bulls LEGEND Greg Sutton, Callum Mallace, Shavar Thomas, Lamar Neagle, Collen Warner, Andrew Wenger, Justin Braun

Let's go Red Bulls.

Still feeling last night punching me in the head (it’s only 2:10 here) and looking for a blow-out to pick me up.

5' Dangerous ball across the box from Mapp is taken by Meara

Nyassi was sliding in on the back post and would have scored if not for Ryan’s intervention

there were four red bulls waiting for the ball from solli and he couldn’t find any of them

lindpere received that ball from miller and then ran into the exact same space.

lindpere’s looked timid today and hasn’t made the best decisions.

miller and lindpere look like a circus show out there. neither of them knows what he’s doing, let alone what the other is doing. looks like they’re both playing with horse blinders and clown shoes on.

Holgersson looked like a little girl when he came out to pressure Mapp.

Solli showed yet again that he’s not a natural defender.

And the veneer on Meara is starting to crack.

Agreed, agreed, and I hope you’re wrong.

Little thing

Just now when Miller tried to play the ball into the strikers, Lindpere made a run checking to the ball to take his defender and try open up space for Henry and Cooper. But no one ran with Lindpere. The Montreal right back stayed and pinched central to deal with the cross that he knew was coming. No one on Montreal thought Miller would actually play a ball to Lindpere.

Telling...he hasn't had a huge influence on the game.

Or bad scouting from Montreal.

i like how Henry went to celebrate with Solli. and Cooper came over to them. no one congratulated Ballouchy?

I just saw the announced attendance: 13,415.

That is horrible.

So I know I’m going to mull up what he actually said but Chris Heck argued that increasing the value of the game experience by increasing ticket prices, right?

If a team tried doing that down here in Mexico they’d be laughed at. Lobos BUAP are a second division team that have traditionally been a top half finisher. All of their home games are completely free of charge. The team makes money by collecting a fee on all the concessions sold during the game. When the weather is nice and they’re playing a decent team the stadium will easily see upwards of 13,415. I was at a match against the Pumas reserve(ish) team that had the 20,000 seat stadium more than 3/4 full.

The actual attendance is probably a lot less than 13,415 for RBA today. There are definitely many other factors at play in this comparison, but one of these approaches seems to be working.
