This will either be RBNY’s last game of 2018 or the team’s greatest ever performance in the playoffs.

Atlanta United brings a 3-0 lead into Red Bull Arena for the second leg of the 2018 MLS Eastern Conference Final. Merely to send the series to extra-time, the New York Red Bulls must post a 3-0 win of their own.

The only result that can send the game beyond 90 minutes is a 3-0 win for RBNY. That would set-up 30 minutes of extra-time in which the away-goal tiebreaker would no longer count: whichever team scores the most goals in extra-time wins. If the scores are still tied after the additional time, then a penalty shootout would decide which team advances to the MLS Cup Final.

Should Atlanta score and thereby register an away goal, then RBNY must win by four goals to advance.

It is a tall order for the Red Bulls to move beyond this round of the playoffs. They will be expected to impose themselves on Atlanta from the kick-off, but head coach Chris Armas has promised his side’s approach to the match will be “intelligent” - so perhaps RBNY won’t be pushing nine men into the box from opening whistle.
