Derrick Etienne, captain of the New York Red Bulls U18 Academy team, will be playing for Haiti in the CONCACAF U20 Championship in Jamaica. The midfielder is currently committed to attend the University of Virginia in the fall with fellow Academy players Malcolm Dixon and Wesley Wade. Etienne has 9 goals and 13 assists for the 9-1-3 U18s who are ranked second in the country by TopDrawerSoccer. In addition to his time with the Academy, he has played with the U23s and the Reserve team.
The Paterson, N.J. native was named to the 2014 NSCAA Youth All-American team along with three of his U18 teammates. In addition, he was named to TopDrawerSoccer's Best XI at the U.S. Development Academy Winter Showcase. J.R. Eskilson described Etienne as having the ability to "create magic from nothing."
Etienne comes from a football/soccer/net-kicky family. His father and uncle represented the Haitian senior national team and played for the Long Island Rough Riders.
Haiti is in Group B and plays Canada (Saturday, January 10), Cuba (Monday, January 12), Honduras (Thursday, January 15), and Mexico (Thursday, January 22). Four teams from the tournament will advance to the U20 World Cup. The group winners automatically qualify. The second and third place teams in each group will play a playoff match for the final two spots.
