New York Red Bulls vs. Colorado Rapids: Live Match Thread

New York Red Bulls vs. Colorado Rapids
Sunday March 25th, 4 PM ET

Red Bull Arena, The Cathedral of Football, Harrison, NJ
TV: ESPN

It's opening day for the New York Red Bulls! We can forget the last two weeks of games (that didn't happen) and start our season anew at home against the Colorado Rapids this afternoon.

We have exciting lineup changes for New York: the previously suspended Rafael Márquez returns to the midfield in place of Teemu Tainio (who doesn't make the bench, and is therefore probably injured), Kenny Cooper again starts alongside Thierry Henry, but Wilman Conde gets a start alongside Markus Holgersson. Also, Taylor Twellman is doing color commentary: kill me now.

Lineups

Red Bulls (4-4-2): Ryan Meara, Jan Gunnar Solli, Markus Holgersson, Wilman Conde, Roy Miller, Dane Richards, Rafael Marquez, Dax McCarty, Joel Lindpere, Kenny Cooper, Thierry Henry (c)

Bench: Jeremy Vuolo, Mehdi Ballouchy, Brandon Barklage, Victor Palsson, Jhonny Arteaga, Stephen Keel, Connor Lade

Rapids (allegedly 4-3-3): Troy Pickens, Kosuke Kimura, Marvell Wynne, Drew Moor (c), Luis Zapata, Jaime Castrillon, Wells 'Scumbag' Thompson, Ross LaBauex, Brian Mullan, Omar Cummings, Tony Cascio

Bench: Steward Ceus, Scott Palguta, Tyrone Marshall, Hunter Freeman, Joseph Nane, Andre Akpan, Quincy Amarikwa

Please win.

anyone happen to have tv info for mexico?

by coys_from_wny on Mar 25, 2025 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it's on ESPN in the US...

So maybe the same there?

Nah, oh well.

Also the fact that ESPN Deportes isn’t the same as either ESPN or ESPN2 in Mexico was a bit confusing for the first month down here.

But whatever. Great start.

Undergrad studying abroad in Puebla.
Made the poor decision to not make it out to the Puebla FC match today assuming they’d lose, and then Beasley tallies another one.

Oh, cool stuff

Is there any lower-league football there? I’m in London, so there are basically clubs around every corner (outside the city center).

by Ben Schneider on Mar 25, 2025 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It's pretty nuts.

There’s a second division team in Puebla, actually at the university I’m going to. I went to a match last week and it was packed. New 20,000 seat stadium. The second division has a national tv deal, which is nice and seemed different to me at first. But there is a ton of men’s rec leagues and most a rather extensive national amateur/semi-pro system that has like 6 teams in and around the city of Puebla.
I’m inundated and it’s great.

by coys_from_wny on Mar 25, 2025 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, I had no idea

England is traditionally associated with well-supported lower-league clubs, but I didn’t know Mexico had similar depth of support.

Where do the clubs draw their fans from — is is class-based, neighborhood-based, or something else?

by Ben Schneider on Mar 25, 2025 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

A lot of the lower level teams represent private preparatory schools or colleges, which have their demographic exclusivity.
What is probably drastically different from England is the lack of consistent and loyal club culture. That could just be because Puebla FC is terrible and has been awful for the majority of the last 20 seasons, but self-described Puebla fans will actively cheer against them when bigger clubs (Chivas, America, Cruz Azul, Santos) come to town.

by coys_from_wny on Mar 25, 2025 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

haha, yeah. people are more fans of the sport than the team.

but i love how everyone in games yells and jeers and cheers and sings. that’s probably the one aspect i wish i could bring back to the states.
that and the two bottles of beer for 40 pesos, 3 bucks.

by coys_from_wny on Mar 25, 2025 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the atmosphere here is great as well

I think the biggest difference in that area is that at RBA, only the South Ward makes any significant noise, whereas at most English grounds, everyone sings and chants.

Having been to a few games at RBA and holding season tickets to the Rochester Rhinos what irks me is how many people show up to games just to be a spectator, instead of participating. I mean, even if you don’t know the songs you can still stand up and cheer when your winger does a double step-over to beat his man.

It could be because we're young ruffians

but I totally agree. Not just in football, but in most sports.

Hard work from Lindpere forces the terrible pass.

And Henry with a silky finish that beats Pickens on the near post. That looks like the goals we give up, what’s going on?

by coys_from_wny on Mar 25, 2025 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

Sponsors

Part time MLS watcher, I don’t understand why the MLS doesn’t makit it mandatory for all clubs to have a shirt sponsor - even if they don’t profit from it. Just completes the look when it comes to football.

by Rob L on Mar 25, 2025 4:23 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think Colorado has been able to get anybody -- I'm sure they've tried.

I think jerseys look kinda nice without sponsors, to be honest.

Well

A badge/emblem is the typical design when it comes to the sport, so something can be done with all that empty space that isn’t gaudy.

by Rob L on Mar 25, 2025 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

that is odd considering how much the league dictates to teams in other areas.

Cooper tracking way back to help press and win the ball back

Not sure how I feel about this…

Managing Editor, OnceAMetro.com

by Ben Schneider on Mar 25, 2025 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

He’s still pushing up on every possession and is too tired to get back and cover his man defensively. It’s just a good thing that Colorado can’t figure out how to exploit that.

HT 2-0

Decent half, not quite as good as the scoreline suggests.

RBNY started quickly but slowed down. maybe intentionally? good way to start a home opener though. especially after two losses

by Alan Wright on Mar 25, 2025 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

If we win, I'll be happy.

Definitely better than the last two weeks.

by Ben Schneider on Mar 25, 2025 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

absolutely, but after two losses like that it makes me look back at some 15 years of frustration. even if its aberrational and meaningless to the standings at season’s end, it makes me roll me eyes.

oh well. every year is a new opportunity.

I’m coming home from the game now. Henry and Cooper were simply sensational up top, Conde was solid, and McCarty seemed to be everywhere. Play from the wings was far, far better than the first two games in both halves and it really helped the Red Bulls get going. One gaffe led to a GA, but for the most part, Colorado didn’t do much.
Overall, I felt the Red Bulls earned every bit of this 4-1 win. They didn’t sit on 2-0 in the 2nd and controlled the ball well in possession. My only real complaints have little to do with the game. Well done, RBNY.
