This is getting silly. There were 25 goals scored by the New York Red Bulls (14 in six matches) and NYRB II (11 in six matches) combined in the month of August. How are we supposed to pick just four nominees for Goal of the Month? With great difficulty, is the answer.
Here are the nominees for Once A Metro's RBNY Goal of the Month: August Edition.
1. Brothers Wright-Phillips (vs. Philadelphia Union, August 1)
A sentimental selection, to be sure. But how often do real-life brothers combine for a goal for RBNY? And how often does that goal inspire something like this?
SWP's assist to BWP was a special moment in RBNY history. The least we can do at OaM is throw it in the mix for Goal of the Month.
2. Fast feet (@ Charlotte Independence, August 5)
Fast forward to the 3:12 mark and ask yourself which is better: Obekop's pass or Stolz's finish? Each is unexpected, difficult to execute, and brilliant.
Fortunately, you don't have to choose since those two quite wonderful moments of individual skill combine for one sparkling goal. And you can vote for in its entirety, if that is your pleasure.
3. The Trick (@ Chicago Fire, August 26)
PRO is of the opinion this goal should have been disallowed. Perhaps it should, but not for the reasons PRO cited at the time or since. We at OaM have issued an opinion on the matter. We even borrowed Jake Catanese, The Bent Musket's resident expert on refereeing issues, for a second opinion.
But all that really counts is the goal did stand. It is part of the official record of MLS and RBNY history. And its novelty makes it one of the more memorable goals of the 2015 season.
4. The official MLS Goal of Week 26 (vs. D.C. United, August 30)
Bradley Wright-Phillips connecting emphatically with a deft cross from Mike Grella. A beautiful goal that ran away with the official MLS Goal of Week 26 vote.
