Allow me to introduce you to your new manager.

Greetings, Finland. I hear you've announced that Hans Backe is going to be your new manager. You're probably asking yourselves, "Who is this guy and what does he do?" much like New York Red Bulls fans were when he was first announced as manager.

Well, after three seasons with him as a manager (2010-2012), I can tell you a few things about the man. Some are good, some are bad, some are just fun.

The 4-4-2

The first thing you need to learn is that Hans Backe loves the 4-4-2. Loves it. Even when it's detrimental to his team's own success, he will play a 4-4-2. Learn to love the formation and hope that your players can adapt to it.

Possession

Even if the team loses or ties (teams managed by Hans Backe tie a lot of games), they will win the possession battle. He hates counter-attacking soccer and parking the bus, referring to it as "cynical soccer" despite it being an effective strategy in MLS. Backe wants his team to have the lion's share of possession and to slow the match down.

No subs

If Hans Backe doesn't like the options on the bench, then he's not going to use them. He routinely would make one or no substitutions during matches and had the lowest average substitutions per match in Major League Soccer.

Playing people out of position

Is your favorite player a defensive midfielder? Now he's a winger. Backe likes to play the best eleven players, regardless of where they fit on the field.

He loves horses

At last count he's owned over 19 horses. Backe would routinely ask players to purchase horses with him. Sadly, I don't think anyone took him up on the offer.

His first love is hockey

Backe played hockey through most of his youth career, but only started coaching soccer because a friend begged him to do it. When coaching, he uses a lot of hockey euphemisms.

He's a mentor and a guide

Although some players didn't like him, many others were helped by the Swede. He recommended many players to coaches in Europe during the transfer window and mentored coaches like Carl Robinson who now coaches the best team in MLS.

He loves the Bengals

The less said about the Bengals, the better. It's a testament to the man that he's stuck with such an awful team all these years.

He likes alt-rock

Joy Division, the Arctic Monkeys, Mando Diao, and so much more! He would frequently attend concerts while coaching the Red Bulls.

He's also a treasure trove of great quotes

  • In life, you must take chances.
  • I like Michelle Pfeiffer, it all started with "Scarface."
  • "In a way..."
So enjoy your new manager, Finland. Some days he's a great coach, other days you wonder why he was hired in the first place. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want him fired, but you will be entertained. Oh boy, will Hans Backe make things interesting.
